Before students begin training

Before students begin their training at Sumalee, their individual training needs and goals are assessed and each student is assigned a training mentor to help them get the most out of their time at the gym. Every aspect of the training schedule offered is optional and students can opt in and out to suit their own personal objectives.

Sumalee caters for everyone, from complete beginners wanting to learn Muay Thai from scratch to experienced fighters looking for intensive pre-fight/fitness training. All training is closely supervised by Sumalees experienced team of fighters and teachers.- Sumalee Boxing Gym Training schedule

Daily schedule Monday to Saturday

Sumalee Boxing Gym runs two 2 hours group Muay Thai training sessions daily Monday to Saturday. The classes take place at 07:30 and 16:00 to ensure the weather is at its coolest and to allow for maximum relaxation and recovery in between sessions. Saturday morning training often takes place on nearby picturesque beaches (leave the camp at 07:00).

Training styles

Typical group training session

  • Bag work - developing strength and technique for neck, hands, knees, elbows, and legs
  • Clinching - unique to Muay Thai and particularly important for those students who wish to fight
  • Cool down - Particularly important aspect of the work out as it reduces the possibility of muscle cramping
  • Muay Thai technique - 5 x 3 minute rounds on the pads working individually with a trainer to improve technique and build speed, power, and endurance
  • Stretching - (neck, arm, shoulder, hip, leg, ankle)
  • Shadow boxing
  • Sparring - focusing on speed, footwork and endurance rather than power
  • Warm up - e.g. running, skipping, tyre bounce

Improving cardio-vascular fitness

Improving cardio-vascular fitness is a key component of a Muay Thai training programme. Most students achieve this by supplementing their training with running sessions, increasing the distances during the course of their stay. Many choose to run before the early morning group session as this is the coolest part of the day. There is a choice of running routes of various lengths and intensities directly from the gym.

Muay Thai private lessons

Many students choose to complement their group classes with private one-on-one sessions with one or more of our instructors to maximise their training and focus on personal goals. Private lessons are available outside of group training times and last one hour.

Sumalee Boxing Gym

Background

Sumalee Boxing Gym in Phuket, Thailand, offers traditional Muay Thai training and much more. Sumalee Boxing Gym is the newest Muay Thai training camp in Phuket. It sets a new standard for Muay Thai training facilities on the island and is the only traditional training camp with a swimming pool, mini games pitch and air conditioned weights studio on-site. Our camp is located in the centre of Phuket in an unspoiled location on the east coast, behind one of the most Iconic Chinese temples on the island.

Students will have the opportunity to have a unique Thai cultural experience with Muay Thai at its core. They will get to see areas of Phuket most visitors to the island never even knew existed and the gyms central location means that all the major tourist attractions on the island are easily accessible. Surin Beach, Bang Tao Beach, Nai Yang Beach, and Nai Thon Beach are all within easy reach of the gym.

Trainers and the experience

The gyms name and training style was inspired by Sor Sumalee Gym in Ubon Ratchathani, Esaan. Our training manager, Oron (fighting name Deachkalon Sor Sumalee) and many of our trainers started their Muay Thai careers in Ubon Ratchathani. They bring to the new Sumalee Boxing Gym the Muay Thai style developed and practiced in Esaan tradition over hundreds of years.

Sumalee Boxing Gym provides the highest standard of Muay Thai training in phuket. All of our trainers are selected on the basis of their personal fight history and their competence in teaching. Most have had experience of teaching Muay Thai in other countries and have previously worked as trainers in some of the best gyms in Thailand. They all have a good grounding in spoken English.

Training environment

Sumalee Boxing Gym will appeal to those students who wish to practice Muay Thai in a traditional Thai setting. Sumalee Boxing Gym is set within a large coconut and banana plantation, offering a very natural and spacious setting to train in.

Within the vast grounds of the Muay Thai training camp there is: a well equipped gym; accommodation for students; a swimming pool; an air conditioned weights studio; space for playing football and other games; a restaurant/food preparation area; communal space with pool table, and home theatre; and the quiet lanes that surround the gym are perfect for longer training runs.

Trainers

Oron Deachkalon Sumalee

Oron is one of the owners and the head trainer at Sumalee Boxing Gym. Oron (fighting name: Deachkalon Sor Sumalee) is very well known both for his impressive fight career and as The King of Esaan Dancing. He started his Muay Thai career at the age of 13 when he was given to Sor Sumalee Gym in his home town of Ubon Ratchathani because his father couldnt afford to look after him anymore. At that time, Sor Sumalee Gym was one of the most renowned gyms in Thailand, producing many famous fighters with a unique style in the clinch.

Oron achieved the highest ranking at Lumpinee and was very highly ranked at Ratchadermneon too. Oron fought within the Bangkok arena between the ages of 15 and 24, during which time he notched up more than a hundred wins at Lumpinee and Ratchadermneon. Oron has always been known as much for his infectious personality as for his fighting. When he started fighting in the Chiang Mai area at the age of 24, he introduced an Esaan dance into his repertoire. This has allowed Oron to achieve great fame in Thailand and many ordinary Thai people who have nothing to do with Muay Thai know him because of this.

He still appears on television and in magazine/news paper articles because of this. In 2010, Oron went to the UK to gain experience as a trainer there. He offered training and seminars at Ocean Gym in Southampton and Benfleet Gym in Essex. He also took part in and won the UK Superfly 59 kg tournament, beating of the UKs top fighters within that weight category on the way. Oron has worked in Phuket as a trainer for three years and many people come to Phuket specifically to train with him. He is one of the few trainers in Phuket who is still very active on the regional fight circuit.

He still often fights at stadiums in Phuket and is a certain crowd pleaser, both because of his supremely technical fighting capability and his overall entertainment value. Oron is approved as a Muay Thai coach by the National Sports Authority of Thailand. He has an interest in Muay Boran and likes to teach Muay Boran techniques as part of his repertoire. Not only is he a great trainer, he loves to entertain visitors to the camp with his Esaan singing (he has won several local competitions) and his excellent Thai cookery. Oron oversees and is responsible for all aspects of the Muay Thai training and fighting at Sor Sumalee Boxing Gym.

Jack Sumalee

Khru Jack originates from Khon Kaen, but has lived away from his place of birth since he was 15 years old when he first went to Bankok as a fighter. He started training Muay Thai at 6 years old and says that the discipline was in his blood because most of his family was involved in it. He was trained by his father at home for all of his early years and had his first fight when he was 6 years old. Since then he has fought over 300 times.

He fought at Ratcherdermneon, Lumpinee, and Channel 3. He was North Eastern Champion at 19 years old at 126 lbs. He was also finalist for the Channel 3 Thailand Cup and he was Vice PABA Champion in 2008. Besides fighting Muay Thai, Jack is also an extremely skilled western boxer. He has fought all over the world including Korea, Japan, China, Russia, and Italy.

He stayed in Italy and worked at a gym there for an extended period of time and also worked in Macau for approximately 3 years. He speaks basic Cantonese, as well as basic English. Jack has worked as a trainer in a number of gyms in Bangkok and most recently was at Jockey Gym. He is of the same Esaan tradition as the other trainers at Sumalee Boxing Gym and brings considerable personality and flair with him. He is a must as a trainer for anyone wanting to focus on their boxing and at 74 kg he is a favourite with farang nak muay.

Lambang Sumalee

Khru Lambang was a trainer at Sor Sumalee Gym in Ubon Ratchathani when Oron and Cartoon were training there. He has over 200 fights to his credit, having fought regularly in Isaan and Bangkok until he was 23 years old. Unfortunately, his fighting career was brought to an abrupt end when he broke his arm, but this was not before he took on opponents, such as Denalli and Panta Fairtex. He was trained by his uncle at home until he was 13 years old and then went on to train Sor Sumalee Gym.

From the age of 23, Lambang worked as a trainer in Sor Sumalee Gym, where he was responsible for training and conditioning famous fighters such as: Hue Dtapagn; Supalek; Jomponlek; Deachkalon (our Head Trainer Oron), and Lumpini Champion and Muay Thai superstar, Lamnamoon. Lambang has been brought in to Sumalee Boxing Gym to utilize the skills he gained through training champions in the past and is specifically responsible for training the fight team.

Max Sumalee

Khru Max joins us from his hometown of Khon Kaen in the North East of Thailand. Muay Thai was his passion from a very young age. After joining a local gym, Sor Sitsawad, he would train after school and had his first fight at 8 years old. He went on to have 50 fights with Sor Sitsawad before moving to the well known Sor Kingstar gym where he stayed for 2 years winning 2 state titles in Khon Kaen.

At 14 years old, Max moved to Jockey Gym in Bangkok, this gave him the opportunity to train alongside champions including legendary fighter, Saenchai. He continued his school education whilst at Jockey Gym as well as training twice a day. Max has fought over 200 times winning around 130 of his matches and was ranked 6th at both Lumpinee and Ratchadamnern at 135 lbs.

He was also in the Thai National B Team for western boxing. After a succesful career inside the ring he trained in many countries in Asia such as China and Japan and was even a bodyguard in Macau before returning to Thailand. Max now joins us in Phuket for the foreseeable future and is a strong addition to the team. His larger stature and height makes him popular with middle - heavyweight nak muay.

Sumalee Boxing Gym is a Muay Thai training camp located on the east coast of Phuket, adjacent to Phang Nga Bay, and approximately 8 minutes drive from the world famous Laguna Beach area.
